LiftMaster 4-1 Error, Door Opens Fine Manually, Opener Reverses Only Under Load
LiftMaster garage door opener suddenly stopped closing this morning and I’m trying to narrow down whether this sounds like a force calibration issue, opener issue, or something subtle with the door balance.
Details:
- LiftMaster opener installed in 2022
- Worked perfectly last night
- Opened normally this morning
- After opening, it would no longer close
- Error code: 4-1 “Excessive Closing Force Detected”
- Safety sensors are aligned and showing normal
- Tracks are clean
- Rollers/wheels look good
- Chain looks normal
- No grinding, banging, popping, or strange noises
Important part:
I pulled the emergency release and the garage door itself moves EXTREMELY easily manually. I can literally open and close it with one hand without struggling at all. Door feels smooth and balanced.
I then disconnected the opener from the garage door completely and tested the opener by itself.
At first:
- the opener carriage/trolley would try to move forward slightly
- then immediately reverse
But later:
- I tested it again with NO garage door attached
- and the opener successfully ran the trolley all the way down the rail normally
As soon as I reattached the garage door:
- same issue came back immediately
- opener starts to close
- then reverses/stops with the 4-1 error
So now I’m wondering if this is:
- force/travel calibration issue
- opener becoming overly sensitive
- slight spring/door balance issue the opener notices but I don’t manually
- RPM/force sensor issue
- or logic board issue
The door genuinely feels completely normal manually though. No heaviness whatsoever.
Curious what you guys think before I call a tech Monday.
