Cercasi consigli!!!

Buongiorno a tutti,

Advice needed: Switching from an SUV to a Daily Driver/Weekend Camper?

Good morning everyone,

We would love some advice from you all, whether you are experts or just starting out.

Currently, it’s just the two of us: my wife and I, plus our 3-year-old Golden Retriever, Harvey. We own a car and a motorbike. The car is a Volvo XC40 Mild Hybrid, which my wife uses for her commute (5 km each way).

We got into the world of vans and nature-living this past summer during a trip to Finnish Lapland. We fell in love with the lifestyle—showering outdoors, stopping at lakes that were basically all ours, even "doing our business" in the woods... it was an incredible blast! You create memories that you truly never forget.

It got me thinking: why pay for a car (we bought it on finance) if we can create a vehicle that works as a daily driver but also serves as our "adventure buddy," allowing us to bring Harvey along instead of leaving him with friends?

I’ve started diving into this world, looking for a vehicle that’s practical for daily life (even if a kid comes along in the future) but flexible enough to be converted into a sort of camper for weekends and holidays.

Here are the requirements we have in mind:

  • Reliability and mechanical safety: Non-negotiable. Our safety is the top priority.
  • Space for a bed and a large kennel: We need Harvey to travel safely and have a "secure spot" to sleep (I was thinking maybe under our bed?).
  • Storage: Enough room for an electric stove, a small table, two backpacks, and basic survival gear. It needs to be large enough to live in comfortably, but still manageable enough to park at a shopping mall.
  • Walk-through cabin: We’d like front seats that allow us to move freely into the back.

To be honest, I’m terrified of buying used. I don’t want to sound like an idiot, but I’m scared of being stranded and not knowing how to fix anything. We aren't handy at all—we’re willing to learn, but right now, our technical know-how is at zero.

My wife is more than interested; her dad had a camper when she was a kid and they traveled everywhere. However, a full-sized motorhome feels like the "next step" to explore only if we find out we truly love the van life (plus, there’s the cost factor).

Am I missing something? Does this sound like a smart and feasible solution?

Budget-wise: Obviously, the less the better! But to give you an idea: I’d sell the car, which would give us a down payment of about €10,000–€15,000, and I’d finance the rest. Since it would be our primary vehicle, I’m looking at a total of around €40,000. I see it as a reasonable investment, but I might be wrong—which is exactly why I’m writing here.

Which models would you recommend based on your experience?

Sorry for the long post, and a huge thank you to anyone who can help!
