Built a Chrome extension because I got tired of buying outdated online courses from Udemy.

One thing I noticed is that some highly rated programming courses on online learning platforms like Udemy are actually pretty outdated, especially in fast moving areas like AI and web development.

Old ratings still keep many of these courses ranked highly even when parts of the content are no longer relevant.

Udemy doesn't even show course creation date properly which is kind of annoying.

So I built a small Chrome extension that shows a course freshness score directly in the search results based on:

  • course creation date
  • latest update date
  • update consistency

Built it mainly for myself at first, but figured other learners might find it useful too.

Would genuinely love feedback from people who actually need this.

I kept buying outdated Udemy courses, so I built a Chrome extension to check course freshness

A lot of highly rated programming courses on Udemy haven’t been updated consistently despite major changes in frameworks and tech ecosystems over the years. Many of them still remain “highly rated” mainly because those ratings were accumulated years ago.

Especially in fast moving areas like AI, Web Dev, course freshness matters almost as much as ratings now.

Udemy doesn't even show course creation date properly, I got tired of buying highly rated outdated courses, so I built a small Chrome extension that displays the course freshness based on the course creation as well as the the latest update date.

The freshness score is shown directly in the search results, so users don’t have to open and check every course individually. This has been helpful for me for filtering out outdated courses.

Built it mainly for myself at first, but figured other learners might relate to the problem too.

I analyzed a bunch of top selling Udemy courses and found something interesting

A lot of highly rated programming courses on Udemy haven’t actually being updated frequently despite major ecosystem/framework changes over the years.

The old ratings still keep those courses at the top, which makes it hard to know what’s actually up to date. Also, course creation dates aren’t directly shown on the website, so it’s easy for beginners to miss how old some courses really are.

In order to solve this problem for myself, I built a small Chrome extension that displays the course freshness based on the course creation as well as the updation date.

The freshness score is shown directly in the search results, so users don’t have to open and check every course individually. This has been helpful for me for filtering out outdated courses.

If anyone’s interested, I’d be happy to share it, just leave a comment.
