Doctors didn’t help much, so I tracked my migraines and found my triggers

So I’ve been dealing with migraines for years, and honestly doctors weren’t very helpful in the beginning—mostly just told me the same stuff about sleep and general lifestyle things. I got sick of that and started taking matters into my own hands by tracking everything and trying to figure out my triggers.

Spring trigger pattern (May 1–2):
Every year around spring I start getting the same headaches, so I started thinking it might be allergies. I did some research and found that pollen can trigger histamine release, which can cause sinus/nasal swelling and pressure. What stood out is everything hits the left side of my face, left eye swelling, left nasal congestion, and a throbbing migraine behind my left eye and left side of my head.

What I tried:
I used antihistamine tablets during an episode and it helped a lot at first. But the next day the migraine still came back later in the day with congestion and eye swelling. So I added saline rinses twice a day, kept taking allergy meds, and wore a mask outside to reduce pollen exposure. Breathing improved, but the headaches were still coming back.

Second trigger I noticed (May 3–5):
Even with allergies somewhat under control, I was still getting migraines. While paying closer attention, I noticed driving on the freeway I was squinting hard, sunlight and brightness were making it worse. I looked into it and found photophobia is common with migraines, so I added sunglasses.

I also realized constant weather changes in Michigan, hot one day, cold the next, pressure shifts, might be stacking on top of everything too.

Breakthrough (May 6):
I went to work (I do HVAC) thinking I had it under control: saline rinse, allergy meds, mask, sunglasses. Still got hit with that familiar pressure behind my eyes.

I got frustrated, took an early break, and sat in my van with the AC blasting. Within about 5–10 minutes, the headache completely faded. That’s when it clicked, cool air probably helps constrict blood vessels and calm whatever nerve irritation is happening during these episodes.

I ran AC the rest of the day and the migraine never came back.

What I realized:
I hate having the AC on because I get cold easily, but if it stops this pain I’ll take it. I’ll deal with being cold all year if it keeps me out of that level of torture.

Now I think it’s a combination of
Allergies, histamine response
Light sensitivity
Heat and temperature sensitivity
Constant Michigan weather swings

Current routine (2+ days migraine-free so far):
Saline rinse twice daily
Antihistamine for inflammation
Mask outside
Sunglasses for light sensitivity
Staying cool with AC when needed

Still figuring it out, but at least now I’m seeing patterns instead of guessing. If anything, I learned not to give up, track everything. The triggers might not be obvious at first, but they show up if you pay attention.

Hopefully this solves my problem.
