I am currently a junior biology major applying to vet school for my first cycle. I have hundreds of hours of animal hours, shadowing, and being a vet assistant. I love everything medical but have chosen the veterinary pathway for my love of a challenge in the different species that must be learned. I currently work at a veterinary clinic and am not sure if this is the right career for me. I have been put in the back in the kennels a lot lately and I hate it. The influx of dogs and cats (around 30-40 on average) seen while being boarded is crazy for being the only person back there along with doing additional tasks to help up front. It’s great when I get to have patient interaction and observe surgeries. I do not even know how to go about figuring that out considering I already have dedicated so much time and effort towards becoming a vet. There are times I love everything I do and other time I think about working in human medicine also. If I were to switch I would either take the MCAT or do an accelerated nursing program to become an RN. I keep going back and forth with the pros and cons. I am also thinking about the immense amount of debt and depression surrounding the veterinary field. I hate knowing everyone is severely underpaid and called crooks. But at the same time giving care and helping animals feel better is an amazing feeling. I am looking for advice because spending time there isn’t helping me decide.
