What rights do I have regarding an ex harassing me for money a year after we split?
For full transparency I am posting from a burner account and would like to share all the details of what happened so I can hopefully get the best advice (NSFW).
I started dating this guy in December 2024, things moved way too quickly and my hopeless romantic ass just thought “wow it’s finally happening for me”. He moved into my place on our third date and told me his landlord wouldn’t renew his lease. This was the first of many lies I now know.
He made me throw out thousands of dollars worth of my stuff because “I had owned it during prior relationships”. He physically took stuff down and threw it in the dumpster of my apartment building.
We decided to look for a larger apartment together, and found one and signed a lease. We were both on the lease.
The initial deposit came out of my sole account, but the second (pet) deposit (for my cat) came out of an account he had gotten himself added to.
He got me pregnant and that’s when the abuse started. He would track how frequently we had sex and we were “not allowed to miss a day”. He became forceful about it to the point he ended up raping me because I had a UTI and told him I was in too much pain.
He was controlling and manipulative and would track where I was and question me about everything I did and accuse me of being unfaithful (which never happened). Even on my breaks at work he would insist I call him instead of talking to my coworkers.
I finally came to my senses in late March 2025 and broke up with him the first few days of April. He was removed from the lease and I moved into a smaller apartment in the same building but didn’t have the deposit reimbursed at that time for the larger apartment. I also got an abortion around this time which absolutely shattered me, but I couldn’t be tied to this monster for the rest of my life.
During the duration of the relationship, all of the financial things came out of my account. There were instances he transferred me, but not equal to the amounts that left my account. However, many of those accounts no longer exist as I had them closed after we split so he couldn’t take financial advantage of me anymore.
I woke up to a call from my landlord this morning saying my ex was trying to contact them for his half of the deposit and they said that was a matter between him and me. I haven’t heard from him directly as I have him blocked everywhere.
I guess my question at this point is, do I have enough of a case to get a restraining order against him, or do anything legal to make him go away? He has his PR, not sure if he has his citizenship yet, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.
