We are planning to move abroad to teach at international schools starting 2027-28 school year. We plan to target Asia (primarily China, but open to other locations too).
My spouse is fully licensed and has 5 years of experience teaching high school science (mostly Biology). I am licensed in middle school and high school math, but i had never taught in schools (only TA in college). I have been working in corporate for the last 10+ years. But we would like to make this shift for ourselves and our kids (we have two).
Couple questions:
timing of the hiring season. Had it shifted in the last few seasons?
Do you recommend spouses work in the same school vs different schools?
I cannot quit my current job and teach for a year. It would not be financially possible for us while we are in the US. I have been reading that international school market is getting tighter, so i do worry what if i would not get a position. I do not know how realistic that is. My highest education level is Masters.
I had also looked into the positions in China in international companies. While pay maybe higher than teaching, but with that i would not get the perks of time off with kids, so we could travel as family. But i am considering this as well in case getting into the teaching position will be harder for me.
Shift for our middle schooler. Anything that we could do this year to make this transition smoother for them?
any other advice for us
