Joined as backend intern and was told to contribute to Linux of torvalds

Just as the title suggests , I was hired for a backend engineer intern but the company assigned me to contribute to oss and the first project was Linux. Like imyself use ubuntu and you are telling me to contribute to it.

I had given the interview very well like not one question was there which I have not answered and this is how highly they think of me.

Damn indian companies how do they generate income from opensource contributions??

Like gsoc scams or something where one contribute on behalf of other fellows??

Edit: After reading the comments , i understood it is common for companies to do so. I should have asked for less complex project instead of leaving it. But my techstack does not align with it ( again that is my problem) so I chose comfort over experience. So my bad Sincere apologies.

Context-:
My phone doesn't work without charger, if i plugged out the charger then it stucks on boot loop.

So my plan is to plug it in the charger and leave it near my wifi and do home labbing, by installing Custom Linux Kernel.
I tried almost Everything, adb, fastboot, but there is no way to root my device.

I have contacted the vivo customer service and they told the do not support rooting.
So, Here is the deal [I am buying new phone] i am ready to brick my smart phone, I just hate that the companies gate keep these things, [If i paid full price then i should own everything.] I have opened the phone completely from inside out, removed each and every component and reassembled it as well, Still Please Help Me.

So if anyone helps me here it will be a great help, I am ready to be on Zoom meeting, Or Google Meet, to get connected. I just want to root this phone and install linux.

I have linux PC myself.

Also: I have installed termux and given it boot permission to auto start [But it is not sufficient for home labbing Please Help Me Here. ]

It will be a great Help , I want to use a rooted phone for once in my life, Is it too much to ask ?
