Hi Everyone!
I should preface this by saying that I have never *actually* played D&D before. I found my way to exploring D&D via Stranger Things and Baldur's Gate 3. However, I'm planning on heading down to one of my nearby games stores that host D&D games so I can get involved.
With that said, I want to make sure that (a) my character(s) is/are well thought out; and (b) I have a good handle on the rules and mechanics, so I'm not holding the group up by constantly checking how things work.
I'm currently working on a Rogue/Cleric build. The original concept was a high DEX, WIS & CHA character that is primarily Rogue, but with some spellcasting. Since I chose to go with WIS over INT, I decided that the plan is to multi-class into Trickery Domain Cleric, rather than going Arcane Trickster.
I have a few questions about this, but most notably is in relation to the title... I am trying to plan out the first 8 levels, and I'm looking at a 5:3 split between the classes. Now Cleric gets Spirit Guardians at Level 5, meanwhile Rogue gets a boost to Sneak Attack (1d6 to 3d6). The obvious *gameplay* choice is to take Cleric 5, and get Spirit Guardians, which is vastly superior to Sneak Attack, but the *narrative* choice is to take Rogue to 5, since the original concept was "Rogue who can use spells" not "Cleric who can pick locks".
When it comes to making worse *mechanical* choices in favour of *narrative-driven* choices, am I just gonna be pissing everyone off by essentially taking something that is *worse*? I know that D&D is largely about narrative and storytelling, but I also don't want to make a character that is hot garbage and piss everyone off in the process.
For some additional context, the idea was that I would be making "myself" in D&D form. Looking at the stats, I am ultimately more of a WIS/CHA person than I am an INT person. I am working on two builds: a Dex-forward build and a Str-forward build, just so I can experience both melee and ranged and understand which I enjoy more.
Am I overthinking this?
