Taking action to secure my present and future situation

I just lost a reliable source of income and I'm in need to secure employment but I'm not sure what would make most sense in my situation. Other than a friend of mine I live with, I don't have anyone reliable to get sensible advice from so I'm here reaching out to someone with wisdom and more life experience than myself.

In regards to my background; I'm a 29 year old male that rents a room from a friend. The job skills I have the most strength in is pipelaying (sewer, water, storm) and grade checking in civil construction. I also have experience in operating heavy equipment and conveyor belt splicing. I got decent mechanical aptitude and I'm confident with doing math regards to calculating slopes and elevations. I have a 10 year old son that lives with his mother primarily with no child support nor courts involved. I don't have any immediate family that I'm in contact with or close by. Other than my friend and some of his family, I don't have no one else in my life.

Recently I've been reaching out to a health provider in regards to having my self screened for ADHD, in hopes of receiving the proper help I need to so I live a more functional life. Then I planned on pursuing vocational training so I can get out of construction and earn more money. Yesterday I've lost a reliable source of income and today when I came to pick my son up, his mother expressed to me that her and her boyfriend are on the verge of losing a roof over their head. The mother's boyfriend is suffering from health complications that prevents him from working at this moment. Also I owe the mother's grandparents ~$20,000 that I haven't been able to make payments on recently and they are growing impatient. I've also have ~$6000 in credit card debt. I don't have any savings, investments, nor possessions other than 2 vehicles I own out right (one running and the other one non running).

I've been seriously considering getting back into commercial fishing again. The logic behind that is so I can pay down my debts quick and rebuild my savings. My friend argued that I should get my old job back (large heavy civil construction corp) with a with a company I worked with previously that's always been reliable with consistent work. My friend's point is that I need to be here physically available for my son at a moment's notice. I agree with what he says and I do want to stay local but l'll be living paycheck to paycheck like I have been and make slow or no progress on paying down debts and building my life for myself and my son. The current cost of living and volatility of our economy has had a huge impact on my life (and I'm sure others reading this feel it too).

I've been told by some of my son's immediate family that they'll have a roof over his head for him if the worst is to happen but I also don't want to rely on that. I'm conflicted on the path to take and I would much appreciate any advice/perspectives shared with me.

Thank you for taking the time in reading this post!
