I just got a position as a resident physician at a private practice clinic. It was my first choice spot and I’m so beyond excited and grateful to have been offered this position.

That said, I was notified of the salary, which is very low. It’s $40,000/year. I expected low pay as a resident but it’s in an expensive town and that’s like barely scraping by. My mom thinks I need to negotiate salary but asking for more money is my absolute worst nightmare and I’m just happy they want me on their team.

I’m just worried I won’t be able to afford food with that salary and even kind of offended the offer is that low. Like they don’t value me? I mean $50,000 would have made more sense and I was expecting around that.

Is it appropriate to ask for more in this setting? Or should I just take it?
