In Russia, if you ignore a draft notice, you can theoretically be fined $3,000 or even jailed for two years. Realistically, no one cares. I personally ignored a draft notice I received in 2023, and it led to nothing.

If your country forces military service, what are the penalties for evasion? And what penalties are applied in practice?

I was born in Russia, and my parents are Ukrainian, as were their ancestors. In Russia, I'm perceived as a Russian-speaking Ukrainian, and Ukrainians perceive me as a Ukrainian-speaking Russian, even though my Ukrainian parents live in Ukraine. Yet, before the collapse of the USSR, they were perceived abroad as Russian, like any other Soviet citizen.

I find this a rather confusing topic.
