Accidental payment made for OCI services

Hi all

In a bit of a pickle here. I accidentally applied for my OCI while I was in Sydney at the wrong place (apparently) but it still is a government website! After I completed the formalities, I got a pdf generated sent from "no-reply@nic.in" with a confirmation, as per below:

It all looks legit and I have confirmed it is legit, I did not fall for a scam (apart from the one from the indian government!)

This is the email that I've written to them and followed up at least 10 times on this, but till date have not received a single reply.

>Respected Sir/Madam,

>I am writing to seek urgent assistance regarding a refund request for an online application submitted through the Indian Citizenship portal.

>Application Details:

>MHA File Number: <retracted>

>Date of Submission: 10 April 2026

>Service: Declaration of Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

>Amount Paid: INR 8000

>At the time of submission, I completed the application and payment through the official portal (https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/Renounce), based on publicly available instructions. However, I was subsequently advised by the Indian Consulate in Sydney that applications for renunciation in Australia must be processed through VFS Global, and not directly via the portal.

>It appears there is conflicting guidance between:

>The online MHA portal, and

>VFS Global documentation and checklists

>As a result, I unintentionally made this payment through the portal, which is not the correct channel for my application.

>I have previously contacted the support team multiple times (emails in the trailing mail) requesting guidance and a refund, but I have not received any response or acknowledgement to date. I have tried to call the office as well on the number provided but have not been able to speak to anyone.

>Given the circumstances, I kindly request:

>Confirmation that my application will not be processed further, and

>Initiation of a refund for the amount of INR 8000 paid in error

>I would greatly appreciate your intervention in resolving this matter at the earliest, as the delay and lack of communication have been quite concerning.

Then my series of follow-ups, all falling on deaf ears:

My question is simple: Why are there so many websites and checklists, that too on VFS that are contradicting information and outdated.

Even if it is outdated, why are they still accepting payments?

Even if they have accepted the payment, absolutely no one has responded to my pleas for a refund till date.

Funnily enough, you call their number on the website and nobody picks up the call.

The biggest mistake I made is that instead of going to VFS website I decided to google VFS OCI application and got this old link generated through Google Gemini. (<<Insert mega-facepalm here>>)

I really don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

As a newly converted citizen of Australia, I am now in a situation where I am thinking if staying here is worth it or whether India is calling me back home.

Background: I have a master's in IT from Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne and bachelor's of engineering in E&C from Manipal Institute of Technology. I currently work as an IT Manager in Sydney and make a decent living, mainly focusing on project management and ERP. I wonder, what are my options to make a living back in India. I do not really have any major assets in India or any family business to join if I return. I've spoken to multiple people and read multiple reddit threads online and come to the following consensus:

  1. Plenty of people (if not most) returning back to India do so if they have a family business/assets to fall back on.
  2. If you need to go back to India to work a corporate job, living overseas might work as a disadvantage because you're more "westernised"
  3. You are easily replaceable and therefore may need to compensate on work-life balance by working longer hours
  4. If you do not have an MBA, you will hit a career slump and not jump into top paying jobs.

From what I've been told, I might be able to land a 40L+ CTC job with my profile? However, to live a decent upper middle class life in India, you must be making at least 70L + INR.

India is very expensive in terms of going out especially in places like South Delhi and Gurgaon, almost comparable to the amount you would pay in Sydney for a night out if not more.

#1 is an unpopular opinion and might trigger people, but that's what I have personally seen in my circle and hoping to get more POVs on this.

TL;DR: if you have enough money already sitting for you waiting in India via assets/family business, only then you can live a decent life, otherwise get an MBA and try to beat 10,000+ people who can do the same thing you can to get a job that pays you half of what you get as an Australian citizen.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your insights! Yes I do have family pulling me back there (they want to come here but bringing them on a parent visa is too expensive!) however they are also about to retire and I need to take care of them so thats why the finances do become an essential point of the conversation!

Was hoping to get more insights on the 4 points I have listed! Thank you community!
