Hello. My cat had a urinary blockage last year. We rushed him to an emergency pet hospital where he underwent catheterization and was confined for a week. Unfortunately, his symptoms came back. He had difficulty urinating again, and this time, they couldn’t insert the catheter anymore.
Because of that, we decided to go for a perineal urethrostomy. The surgery went well at first, and we could see that he was able to pee properly. But after two weeks, his surgical site closed. We brought him back, and they had to operate again to create a new opening.
After a few weeks, it closed again. We returned to the vet, and they resorted to catheterization since the opening hadn’t completely closed yet. A week later, the catheter was removed, but he was still struggling to urinate. We rushed him to the emergency vet again, but no doctors were available at the time. The next day, we went back, but they couldn’t operate because his infection levels were too high, so he was given medication first to prepare for another surgery.
What happened is that his urethra and rectum fused together (recto-urethral fistula), so his urine now passes through his anus.
Up to now, my baby boy is still with us—still fighting. But we’re honestly terrified to put him through another surgery. He’s already been through so much. He even successfully fought parvo last year. He’s a fighter, that one. 😊
I’m still torn about what to do… I don’t know if putting him through another operation is giving him a chance… or just putting him through more pain. Should I let him go through surgery again and risk everything one more time?
