Physicians at CRLs

Hello, I am currently a US MD psychiatrist at an academic institution who is strongly considering a move to industry. My interest in patient care has been dwindling as a result of excessive documentation burden and a push for more RVUs. Research has proven more exciting and I’ve had some success here, publishing a number of papers and serving as a PI on a grant. Yet it is the medical monitoring that I enjoy the most, as it allows me to address many different clinical issues within trial protocols. While I’d love to continue to have a hand in developing projects without necessarily being a PI, I could also see medical monitoring serving as a full-time career. I have talked to some industry physicians about this interest and they have said that starting at a CRO would be the best first step from academia, as it would give me exposure to many types of industry studies quickly. I do have some questions about working at a CRO as a physician, though, particularly as there’s a lot of negativity about such companies expressed on Reddit. Would any physicians with experience working at CROs be able to comment on said experience? I’d appreciate details on job stability and salary. Also if there are better first-industry jobs I should be considering, please let me know. Thanks!!
