Halo 2 – The Covenant are the main antagonists in the Halo universe, believing a single, absolute religious truth that the Halo rings are divine instruments that will usher believers into the “Great Journey,” a form of transcendence. When the Arbiter discovers the Halos are weapons designed to exterminate all sentient life and unambiguously confirmed by 343 Guilty Spark, the Great Schism erupts, dividing the Covenant into civil war. The entire civilization implodes almost overnight.

The Da Vinci Code: Cryptographer Sophie Neveu discovers that Jesus Christ had a bloodline and she is the last heir of Jesus Christ. The Vatican has known the secret for millennia and has tried to end Jesus’s bloodline to secure their power and prevent the largest crisis of faith since Christianity’s founding. While she agrees to continue to hold the secret to protect herself from the many threats against her life, like the many heirs that have come before her, she still plans on coming out eventually. I never thought Shia Christianity would ever be invented but why not.

Transformers: Before the Great War between the Decepticons and the Autobots, Cybertron was ruled by a religion called Functionalism, a caste system that assigned the value of every Transformer by the alternate mode they could transform to, according to the grand design of Primus. While in reality, both the Functionalist Council and the Senate would be overthrown by the Decepticons, in an alternate reality, the Functionalist Council overthrew them all and became a theocracy. They implement draconian laws including banning cold-casting, artificially creating Transformers, and commit several genocides.

They spend two million years torturing the Useless One, a Transformer with no alternate mode, since he is forsaken in the eyes of Primus, only to discover that he can produce the Sparks necessary for cold-casting. Under Functionalism, this implies that cold-casting was part of Primus’s grand design and should have always been supported. The Council also only holds power because they can transform into the key that allows them access to Vector Sigma, the supercomputer at the core of Cybertron, but after discovering that the computer can be accessed without them, they realize that they are actually useless in the eyes of Primus. They then decide that their true function is Functionalism and that they must create an army using the Useless One to invade to other planets and extinguish all life not in Primus’s image – that is, all life at all.

(Honourable Mention) Mass Effect – The Hanar have started a religion around the legacy of the Protheans, an ancient race regarded with near-religious reverence, and many other species respect them. Their ruins are treated as technological artifacts and evidence of a higher order that shaped the present. This belief begins unravels as you discover the Protheans were imperialistic conquerors and engineered, interfered and controlled the species they dominated. Still, the reaction among the Hanar is mixed because nothing explicitly contradicts their teachings, so their reactions range from denying the allegations to readjustments to private crises of faith.
