Villa Rental “Fiasco”
Took my wife, 1yo daughter, mother in law and grandmother in law on our first family vacation and booked a house in Exuma for a week
On the 5th afternoon, my daughter was napping while we were out by the pool. We realized the carbon monoxide alarm in her room was going off (likely generator related). We grabbed her, opened all the doors/windows, and then additional alarms throughout the house started going off too for close to an hour.
Management was responsive and sent a tech, but at that point the risk/fear was too real so we scrambled to find new accommodations at 5pm in the Bahamas with a baby and two older family members. Ended up paying more money for a worse place, but could have been worse
The owner is an investment company and has been responsive since and reached out that night to help, but by then the move was already in motion. Their offer has been to refund the unused nights plus the cleaning fee, which to me is the clear minimum (note I also flagged the pool was out of commission for over a day).
Part of me feels like that’s too light given the circumstances and the fact that the trip was basically blown up. Another part of me doesn’t want to turn this into a money grab. Nobody was injured but obviously not an ideal outcome for our first family trip
Curious how others would handle this. Accept the offer and leave a fair but detailed review? Push for relocation costs/additional compensation? Escalate through VRBO?
Edit: I miss Alex managing my trips…
