Medical Update: Consultation in Zürich

Even after my surgeries for endometriosis, Nutcracker syndrome, and May-Thurner syndrome, I continued to suffer from persistent groin pain. Due to a large mass of varicose veins, I suspected nerve entrapment.

Last Wednesday, I traveled to Zürich for a consultation with Dr. Possover, where I immediately underwent a diagnostic test treatment. During the consultation, we discussed my medical history, performed an ultrasound, and administered a diagnostic nerve block. The pain during the examination was so intense that I nearly lost consciousness; fortunately, this meant I didn't realize how long the needle was that they had to use.

The last two days have been grueling. The procedure has left the nerve even more irritated, causing significant pain. Dr. Possover was able to locate the exact source by running markers over my skin; every time the sensation disappeared, he marked the spot. Once mapped, he was able to pinpoint the source of the pain internally in one go. It was incredibly impressive, though extremely painful for me.

The findings were confronting:

My abdomen is full of varicose veins and my blood vessels are severely enlarged. There is clear evidence of retrograde flow (blood flowing backward). He also observed extensive adhesions and damage caused by the peritonitis (abdominal lining inflammation) I suffered two years ago. My nerves are indeed entrapped, exactly as I had suspected.

Because venous compressions are so prevalent in my family, we were advised to closely monitor our children for symptoms and to measure their legs periodically.

The formal diagnosis:

• Pelvic abdominal adhesions.

• Neuropathy of the right genitofemoral nerve.

• Bilateral sacral radiculopathy caused by vascular entrapment and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (linked to EDS).

Next Steps:

Due to the high frequency of venous abnormalities in my family, I must first see a hematologist in the Netherlands to rule out specific blood disorders. Once cleared, we will return to Zürich for surgery. I am very hopeful, especially since the doctor was able to immediately locate the specific nerve causing the pain.
