Would you eat fish caught from the Iowa River / Coralville Reservoir? Be honest lmao
So I was down by the river the other day watching some dude pull out a catfish and I had two simultaneous thoughts: 1) respect, and 2) absolutely not?
So I genuinely don’t know where I stand on this. Part of me thinks people have been eating fish out of these rivers forever and they’re fine. The other part of me remembers that this water drains half the cornfields and hog confinements in the midwest before it gets here.
Iowa DNR does put out advisories and I know some people straight up ignore them and live to tell the tale. But also… runoff. Nitrates. Whatever is in that Coralville sediment.
So be real with me… are yall out here eating fish out the rivers?? Are you catching and releasing out of principle? Do you have a “one catfish a month” rule you’ve made peace with? orrrr do you think I’m being a baby about it? lol
Not trying to shame anyone, genuinely curious what the vibe is here. Iowa City has a weird relationship with that river and I want to know where people actually land.
(Also if anyone actually knows the current DNR fish consumption advisory situation for the Iowa River, drop it in the comments bc I can never find a straight answer)
