I currently work in the Film and Tv industry in a paint/ plastering/ finishing trades role and am considering leaving the film industry due to the industry tanking with regards to available work. I'm considering doing a college carpentry course and love the idea of building/ finishing carpentry, remodels and renos. Just curious how necessary an apprenticeship really will be if I gain some skill in a school & already have some skills from demolitions/ some set building and set carpentry?
Would an employer not hire me because I haven't done a formal apprenticeship; or would an apprenticeship be necessary upon graduation? Granted I'm not talking about a pre-apprenticeship course, I'm referring to taking a fulltime post secondary course. Anecdotal but my brother is a successful carpenter (in the film industry) but has also landed senior positions outside film having never done an apprenticeship.
Thanks yall!
