Zone 6b. Japanese Maple. This tree was planted 3-4 years ago and was thriving. Loaded with leaves last year and lots of new growth, with buds set all over the outer limbs. It just never came back this year and everything is dried out and dead other than 2 lower branches. The only thing I noticed was this white lichen-like coating on the trunk, and perhaps a small crack(?) at the base? Curious if anyone knows what may have caused this.
I assume this is a full replacement? If so, any suggestions? I’d like something that is hardy and doesn’t get too big, preferably with a bit of color since I have a lot of green shrubs in the area. This area gets a fair bit of shade, particularly in early spring and late fall, due to my garage on the souther side.
*Update: located in southeast MA
