Please help me get a flight sim birthday present for my husband

Hi everyone sorry for the long post, but I would really appreciate your help.

My(32F) husband(35M)’s birthday is coming up soon and I’m trying to surprise him with the “starting blocks” for a flight sim setup, but I’m very out of my depth and would really appreciate advice from people who are actually into this hobby.

From the research I’ve done, I understand there are very different setup paths depending on what aircraft people enjoy flying most (Airbus vs Boeing...). I have a strong feeling he leans more toward the following:

  • Airbus
  • Airliners
  • A sidestick
  • VR vs Monitor? (that's where I am the least certain, but I would say monitor since he would love to have a full cockpit sometimes in the future)

I’m actually trying REALLY hard not to ask too many questions because he’s very intuitive and I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

He’s also the type of person who’s extremely meticulous about researching and choosing his own gear, so I don’t want to accidentally buy something too specific or something that locks him into a setup he wouldn’t have chosen himself.

Right now I’m considering getting him the Thrustmaster TCA Captain Pack Airbus Edition (the sidestick + throttle bundle). From what I understand, it seems like a pretty solid Airbus-style starter setup that’s actually usable on its own without needing a full cockpit immediately.

I would really love your input on the following:

  • Do you think this is a good “first real setup” gift?
  • Is it considered good enough quality that someone could genuinely enjoy it for a while before upgrading?
  • Or is there another “safe” gift you think works better for someone just getting started?

At the same time, I’m also willing to put a bigger budget into this (I’ve been saving for his birthday) if it makes more sense long-term, which is why I’ve started wondering whether the more important “starting block” might actually be the PC side of things instead of the controls themselves.

He mainly uses a Mac, but he also has a Dell laptop. I honestly don’t know whether that would already be enough to get started with flight sims, or whether a gaming PC is realistically the more important first step.

My hesitation with buying a gaming PC is that he’s VERY particular about specs and I feel like I could easily buy the wrong thing or accidentally choose parts/features he wouldn’t have picked himself. More importantly, I feel like I’d be taking away some of the fun he’d probably get from choosing the specs himself.

So I’d also love advice on:

  • Whether starting with controls makes more sense than starting with a PC
  • Whether there’s any “safe” gaming PC option
  • Or whether I should avoid choosing PC specs entirely and let him pick that part himself later

(little note: He is so NOT a gamer, so the gaming PC would solely be for his flight simulations)

Thank you, I really want him to enjoy his gift and be fully happy with it without accidentally buying the wrong thing.
