Potential termination for attending prenatal appointment.

Location: new jersey

My wife who is roughly 12 weeks pregnant and who has worked in the airline industry is still currently in her probationary period until six months in (she has been working five months)

Already at this point she has missed one trip due to pregnancy related illness (morning sickness) without a doctor's note. Her first ultrasound has been scheduled for this Monday morning and her schedule was for her to be on call and a language speaker from Thursday to sunday which would have not impacted her ability to attend the appointment.

Friday at around 530 pm, after the doctor's offices have already closed for the weekend, they scheduled her for an international flight returning Monday. This extends into her days off which they bid on. To be clear, she was not scheduled on monday, and she specifically bid (and won) a schedule that would allow her to have this first ultrasound appointment on a day that did not impact work. The airline according to the union contract allows for certain qualified positions including hers to be scheduled on days off when operationally required.

She has tried calling crew scheduling and her immediate supervisor who informed her she has no choice but to attend the trip or be miss tripped which would effectively be a termination.

I mean how ridiculous is that? She had this prenatal appointment scheduled on a day off and during the weekend. Is it really unreasonable for my wife to attend this prenatal medical appointment and expect to keep her employment?
