⚠️ WARNING: "PBX Scam Caller" Scam – A Dissected Sophisticated Operation - Maharashtra

Quite a few months ago, I became the target of a psychological warfare campaign designed to gaslight me into handing over my identity and installing app. It took 11 days to uncover the truth. Here is how they did it.

🎭 The Setup: The "Ghost" Calls (Days 1–10)

For 10 days, I was bombarded with calls from strangers claiming I had called them. My call logs were empty.

  • Days 1–2 (Hindi):
    • Pune, Caller: "Tumney call kiya tha, who is this and why did you call?"
    • Me: "I didn’t, check your logs, my history is clean."
  • Day 2 (Woman, Hindi):
    • UP Village Caller: "Tumney call kiya tha, who is this?"
    • Me: "I didn't, the number isn't in my logs."
    • Caller: (Abusive/Yelling) "Don't call me again!"
  • Day 3 (Person 4, Hindi):
    • Marathi Caller: "Appney call Kiya tha, miss call aya hai, who is this?"
    • Me: "I didn't, not in my logs."
  • Days 4–5 (Marathi/UP Dialects): Same script, different tones—ranging from annoyed to aggressive.
  • Day 6 (Man, Abusive):
    • Caller: (Very aggressive, screaming) "bc gan* marney key liye call kiya hai?!, mat call kar bar bar bol rha hoon" - Gujarati tonality and geolocation in Mumbai
    • Me: (Matching the energy) [Returned the same level of aggression].

The Realization: By testing these numbers from a secondary phone, I found the truth. Some were real people who had actually received a PBX spoofed call from my number (one women's husband from UP village sent me a screenshot of their logs showing my number), and others were the scammers themselves murmuring the script in cold blood, hanging up the moment they realized I wasn’t the "victim" they expected.

I had one them get a call from actual police thana constable to reveal some details.

🎣 The Payoff: The "Authority" Trap (Day 11)

After 16+ calls for 11 days, the mastermind made their move. I received a call from someone posing as an Airtel representative.

  • Airtel Script: "Sir, your number has been cloned. We noticed it, and it’s a security risk. I can help you."
  • The PII Grab: She immediately asked for my full name, PAN number, father’s name, and phone model followed to some steps of app installation.

I played along to see how deep the rabbit hole went. She was trying to build Authority Bias—using the chaos of the previous 10 days to make me desperate for "official" help, only to rob me of my PII.

🔍 The Verdict: How it Works

  1. The Tech: They use PBX CLI spoofing services (available to cybercriminals) to make trunk, via spoofed/hacked cloud credentials or leased from Russian dark web operators, calls appear as if they are coming from your number in India.
  2. The Psychological Loop: They create a "distortion of reality." You start questioning if your phone is hacked or cloned.
  3. The Climax: The "Authority" figure (the fake telco rep) calls, offering a solution to the problem they created.
  4. Question is who the mastermind playing this to lower mules? Interesting Question

Bottom Line: Your SIM cannot be "cloned" to run on two phones simultaneously in India. If you get a call like this, don't panic. It’s a script. Block, report, and ignore. 🛡️

Also, The central agencies are deploying active monitoring for grid to find spamming or abuse of trunks from outside cloned trunks.

Stay safe out there. Also do comment or share if you experienced a similar modus.

PS- I used LLM to write this coherent.
