Sidearm or secondary weapon on top of main weapon? Or should we max out on ammo for main weapon?

So my likely ZA scenario is that I will be solo foraging a lot ....and the type of Zeds that I think I will be encountering will be the faster Last of Us types because I am just that unlucky.

I will try to avoid fights but my main weapon would be a pencil barreled 18" 5.56 loaded with 55g which I feel like will get me out of most contact situations if I have to shoot plus its something that can eat a variety of 5.56 ammo that I might find in the wild.

In the military, pistols are mostly useless unless you carried the machinegun (like a 240) or are in vehicles a lot as a driver. Most of us grunts just carried our rifles and didnt carry anything else as more 5.56 ammo per person was deemed better which I agree with if you are part of a large group of guys.

With all of that out of the way, would carrying a secondary weapon be practical? Like a suppressed pistol for stealthier shots or a shorty shotgun for quick short range devastating punches. Would it be worth the extra weight and the added complexity of loadout? I expect to walk super long distances so being light would be a priority I would imagine.
