Hey all,
(I used gpt so all info is correct, and bc english is my second language)
I’m 25, based in the Netherlands, and me and my friends basically grew up on:
• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
• Call of Duty: Black Ops
• Call of Duty: Black Ops II
• Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
• Left 4 Dead 2
We’ve easily put 1000s of hours into these, and I want to make sure we can keep playing them for the next 30–50 years, even if servers go offline and hardware becomes rare.
⸻
🧠 The plan
I want to build a fully offline LAN setup (System Link) for:
• 3v3 multiplayer (main focus)
• Zombies
• occasional other games (Doritos Crash Course etc.)
👉 Important detail:
We realistically only play ~3 LAN days per year, but I want this setup to reliably last the next 50 years.
⸻
🎯 Philosophy
I’m not interested in emulation, PC solutions, or recreations.
I want the real hardware experience — original consoles, controllers, feel, and nostalgia.
⸻
🎮 Hardware idea (initial plan)
• 6 Xbox 360s active (LAN play)
• 6 backup consoles (stored for future)
Considering:
• all Xbox 360 Slim
• mix of RGH + normal consoles
• OR all RGH
⸻
🔓 Content plan
My idea was:
• get 2 RGH consoles
• install:
• all games
• all DLC
• title updates
• unlock-all (for CoD)
• then:
• copy everything via USB
• put it on all other (offline) consoles
Goal:
every console has ALL content locally so System Link always works
⸻
🎯 Goals
• play everything offline via System Link
• have all maps (multiplayer + zombies)
• avoid discs (wear & tear)
• be fully independent of Xbox Live / servers
• have enough spare hardware for decades
⸻
❓Questions
🖥️ Consoles
• Is it better to:
• go all RGH Slim
• or mix RGH + stock consoles?
• How many backups would realistically be enough for:
• \~3 sessions per year
• over \~50 years?
⸻
🎮 Controllers & accessories
For ~6 players:
• how many controllers would you stock? (I was thinking 20–30)
• rechargeable kits vs AA batteries?
• how many spare power bricks / cables?
⸻
🎧 Audio setup (important)
We sit in the same room but don’t want to hear each other’s game audio.
• best way to do individual game audio per player?
• any good headset solutions for Xbox 360 that still hold up?
⸻
🌐 LAN setup
• is a simple gigabit switch enough?
• anything special needed for stable System Link with 6 consoles?
⸻
🔓 DLC / content strategy (biggest concern)
• what’s the most reliable way to ensure:
• all consoles have identical DLC
• no “missing map pack” issues
• is using RGH as a “master install console” the right approach?
⸻
⚠️ Longevity concerns
• what are the most common failure points?
• GPU?
• power supplies?
• HDDs?
• what spare parts should I stock now while they’re still available?
⸻
🎯 End goal
Basically I want to build:
🎮 a self-contained offline Xbox 360 LAN “time capsule”
Where even in 2040–2080:
• we plug everything in
• connect LAN
• and instantly play MW2/BO2 like it’s 2010 again
⸻
Would really appreciate input from people who have:
• done LAN setups
• experience with RGH vs stock
• or long-term hardware preservation
Thanks 🙏
