Redoing feature wall

Our home had a clearly DIY feature wall when we bought it and I want to see if there is a way to make it a little more subtle. We can't remove it, because there is apparently a fireplace and built-in shelves behind it, and we can only assume they were damaged in the course of putting up the wall.

It looks like the wood pieces are just glued on so I am wondering if we can pry those off, sand the plywood down, paint it a more muted color, and put up something like the PVC panels in the last picture. I figure if we paint the panels the same color, it will have some depth and interest while hopefully hiding the crudeness of the plywood.

Am I oversimplifying this project? I don't really like how it looks but I definitely don't want to make it look worse.
