Why does getting shortlisted feel impossible without referrals?

I’ve been actively looking for jobs through LinkedIn and Naukri Campus for the past few months, mainly for roles in Marketing or Business Analyst domains.

I’ve received invites or interest from companies like DBS Bank, Franklin Templeton, Aditya Birla, etc. through Naukri Campus, and I applied to those opportunities, but most of them never moved ahead after the application stage. No updates, no interviews, nothing.

On LinkedIn especially, it honestly feels like many openings are either already filled internally or eventually go to someone through referrals. I don’t really have a strong referral network, and that’s where I feel stuck.

I’m trying to understand:

  • How do freshers actually get noticed by recruiters or HRs?
  • Is there something I’m missing in terms of profile, resume, outreach, or strategy?
  • Do companies genuinely hire through open applications anymore?
  • How can someone without strong connections improve their chances?

Please don’t suggest “just do an MBA now” — that’s already part of my long-term plan, but I want meaningful work experience first.
