A while back, I said I would make a SC MUD. That is still going, but while I have that underway, I remembered something I played during the beginning of my programming journey and thought I would bring it up here. 

The website I was using hosted two different kinds of text games: interactive fiction, and Twine. And one of the first of the Twine games I played was called “Aboard the Amerigo”.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, but today, I took a look at the Zerg campaign for StarCraft 1, and saw something very strange that reminded me of that peculiar game. Level five of Episode II is called “The Amerigo”.

The similarities don’t just end there. In the text adventure (which I will abbreviate as TA henceforth), it’s a research ship. The Amerigo in StarCraft is a science vessel. And the Amerigo in the TA has been, quote, “infested”. And what do you know, E2L5 is the first level where you control Infested Kerrigan. I will have to play the game again to find more similarities, but I doubt this is coincidence. What are your thoughts?

I have loved StarCraft for a long time and recently stared writing a book set in a universe heavily inspired by the games. In order to make it my own, I renamed several of the concepts—for example, Zerg became Xark. Shockingly creative, I know.

Eventually, I added in my ghost analogue, and decided that I would call them “SPECTERs” as a parody, since specter is another word for ghost.

Recently, returned to playing StarCraft 2, which I had played with my dad when I was very young. And what do you know? They have ghost-adjacent units called Spectres. I swear I didn’t remember them.

What are the odds? Should I play the lottery? How did this happen?
