Cash sale / comeback

throw away account as my primary might give me away

I want to know the thoughts on this from a consumer/legal point of view.

I bought a new engine off a reputable trader in Dublin but when but when i was collecting i wanted to avoid the VAT on the bill so i insisted in paying in cash and therfore not getting an invoice/receipt (Saved me allot of money). For context its a 2015 2.0 diesel VAG engine the GTD/VRS type.

I brought the engine to my local mechanic and he fitted it. Roll on 2 or 3 months later and its using a bit more oil than i would have thought. Now i dont fully know if its the engine as their are no visible leaks or smoke etc and ive been told they have a complex DPF/EGR/Turbo and other systems on them.

The trader has said that because i insisted on doing a cash sale it was sold as a private sale and no warranty and the usual consumer stuff was implied however he has given me a massive steer on what to check and where the weaknesses on these engines are but that whilst it not impossible for the engine to be using oil it would be unlikely if i followed the correct bedding in proceedure but a list of possibles to rule out like the PCV system and EGR etc etc

Am i an idiot for insisting on a cash deal? My mates have said once it was me that insisted on doing a cash deal its pretty much the trade off you make for "saving" the money on not paying vat and that i might also leave myself a little open for trying to avoid paying tax but it would be unlikely id get in trouble as such
