I'm in the early stages of opening my first med spa in California and trying to wrap my head around the compliance side of things. A few questions for those of you already running a practice:

• Does HIPAA apply to med spas, and how seriously do you take it?
• How do you stay on top of state-specific rules and regulations? Ownership structure, scope of practice, medical director requirements, that kind of thing.
• How do you stay on top of compliance overall? Do you have a system, or is it more ad hoc?
• Are there specific things you track on a monthly or quarterly basis?
• Do you work with a consultant or attorney for this stuff? If so, how often do you meet with them and is it worth the cost?

Would love to hear how others are handling this, especially solo operators or small practices. Thanks in advance.
