Bringing tobacco-free nicotine pouches (VELO/CUBA) to Australia as a tourist for 8 weeks - real experiences?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some recent real-world experiences regarding bringing tobacco-free nicotine pouches (VELO/ZYN style products) into Australia as a tourist.

I’m from Germany, where these products are completely legal, and I use them regularly. My girlfriend and I are doing a longer trip this year:
\- around 7 weeks in Australia
\- then 1 additional week in Thailand
\- so about 8 weeks of travel in total before returning home

Because of the length of the trip, I was considering bringing one “roll” / one sleeve (10 cans total) of tobacco-free nicotine pouches for personal use only. No resale, no shipping, nothing commercial at all.

I’ve already researched the official TGA rules and understand that Australia technically treats nicotine pouches as prescription-only therapeutic products, even though they don’t contain tobacco. I also read that “real” tobacco snus seems to be treated much more strictly. (https://www.tga.gov.au/news/news-articles/nicotine-pouches-are-illegal-australia-unless-prescribed)

What confuses me is that online I keep finding two completely different stories:

  1. Official government/TGA information sounds extremely strict (“illegal unless prescribed”).
  2. But many travelers on Reddit seem to say customs either didn’t care, didn’t check, or simply allowed small personal amounts through.

So I’d really appreciate hearing from people with RECENT firsthand experience entering Australia with nicotine pouches:
\- Did you bring VELO/ZYN or similar products?
\- How much did you bring?
\- Did you declare them or not?
\- Did Australian Border Force/customs say anything?
\- Were products confiscated?

Has anyone actually had serious problems over personal-use quantities?
Would 10 cans for an 8-week trip realistically still look like personal consumption to customs?

Again, I’m not trying to do anything illegal or stupid — I just want to understand how this is actually handled in practice for tourists, because the official wording and real-life reports seem very different.

Thanks a lot!
