Territorial Kittens? (M+F, 8mo)
I have two eight-month-old kittens, a brother and sister. They’re both fixed, but the girl went into heat early at 4 months and was spayed, while the boy was neutered at 5.5 months.
We’re noticing behavioral issues and possible competition between them. The boy often stalks her, ambushes her, and becomes agitated when we try to pet or play with her. We recently realized that she walks away or gives up when he intervenes. They haven’t hissed or swatted, but the annoyance between them is evident. She doesn’t fear him, but she becomes very disinterested when he becomes territorial. Even though she wants to play, she will refuse after he interrupts and won’t participate until he’s removed.
The girl is also overeating and has gained weight from eating his portions in addition to hers. She pushes her way into his food bowl or waits until he leaves the room to eat his portions.
Lastly, we discovered that at least one of them has started spraying on the walls near the front door. It’s the same area every time—we checked everywhere with UV light- so I don’t think it is related to an illness or obstruction. We can’t determine which one it is. We’re unsure if he’s being territorial with her, neighborhood stray cats, or if she’s showing her frustration with him.
What should we do to lessen his aggression towards her?
How can we help them develop individually without animosity?
What should we do to stop them from spraying? I’ve never had a cat that sprays.
