Hi everyone, I’m looking for career advice as a recent college grad (bachelors in bio). I stated working at a histo lab as a lab assistant shortly after grad and they have an HTL program that is paid and one year long. I’m struggling with deciding whether to pursue the program because I wanted to go more of a micro/research route post grad (i have a decent amount of micro and bioinformatics experience) and took this job to get some clinical lab experience. I’ve been at this job for six months now and the program would start in four more months, I got accepted but am so conflicted on if I should enroll because this is not the field I ever saw myself in and idk if I even have a lot of interest in being a HTL… however it seems too good an opportunity to pass up (paid program and hiring at ~29/hr post completion). The current job market is making me think I should do the program for career and financial security but I don’t know if it is something I would want to do long term. Another big factor is I am driving nearly an hour each way to work everyday and would be the same for the HTL program, meaning I would be stuck with the commute and crappy work life balance for another 1.5years. My alternative would be to start applying to jobs again and basically be back at square one. I am so back and forth on what to do. Is this career worth those sacrifices and the job security?
