There are certainly a few for me, but the main ones that come to mind are:

  1. A bunch of emojis. 1 or 2 emojis can be fine if the rest of the description is good, but if I see a bunch of emojis I’m scrolling.
  2. When the description tells me everything that’s going to happen in the story. It’s like modern day trailers, like yes I know they’re going to fall in love, but you don’t need to say “Character A meets Character B at the art gallery. They dance around eachother and deny their feelings until they can’t hold back any more and fall in love.” Like yes even though through the tags I’d usually know that something LIKE that was going to happen, I don’t want you to straight up TELL me before I read it 😭 a reader needs a little mystery
  3. Anything resembling “this is a story about…” I’ll probably still skim the full description if this is the case, but is just gives “in this essay I will”

*DISCLAIMER*
If you’re an author and your descriptions resemble what I just wrote, or what anyone in the comments wrote, that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you are a bad writer or that you should change what you’re doing if this is your style. ao3 is the place where there is something for everyone, and you already know if you have an audience who likes what you’re doing.
