The real VIP of Southern Hospitality is the confessional choreography: A breakdown of the shoulder-less shrugs & confessional theatrics
I’m convinced that there is a mandatory movement seminar at Republic’s orientation because the arm work in the confessionals this season is truly its own character at this point.
There is a very specific signature move they all make: the shoulder-less shrug. It’s a fascinating study in waist-up interpretive dance, where the elbows never leave the torso but the hands are doing a full 8-count.
Let’s look at the ensemble’s individual styles:
* Maddie: DJ by night and conductor by conversation. I love this woman’s flair, using her hands like a world-class conductor leading a symphony of mess. Her sponsor knew all the beats Maddie was sure to hit in her confrontation. In addition to the signature shoulder-less shrug, she is the true pioneer of palms splitting to open imaginary curtains.
* Joe Bradley: With the bro lean. He leans so far forward his forearms do most of the talking. It’s very "guy at a sports bar explaining why his parlay didn’t hit."
* Lake: Especially in her confessional with her long gloves, she’s essentially Salt Bae-ing her own shade. It makes her look like she’s not just talking; she’s delivering a monologue from a balcony.
* Mia: A visual architect. She essentially talks between her shoulders then casually throws her hands up to remind us where her face actually is, like the “you are here” dots on a map, ensuring you never lose eye contact with the logic or her flawless face card.
* Emmy: moves as aggressively agro as she is. She’s either always pulling at her ice capades dress, karate chopping imaginary wood in front of her, or tersely twirling her hair until the manager she requested to speak to emerges.
* Grace Lily: Her hands move like she’s constantly casting a spell or presenting a prize on a game show. It’s ethereal, circular as her hula hopping hobby, and has zero connection to the words coming out of her mouth.
I say all of this with the utmost love for these kooks. Southern Hospitality is the chaotic, high-energy gem we need, and the fact that they are all subconsciously (or consciously?) performing waist-up choreography just makes me enjoy the Republic madness even more.
My apologies in advance, because once you see the shoulder-less shrug, you truly cannot unsee it.
Any other signature moves I missed?
