I’m starting to think I imagined it…

I have been asking for years about a memoir I used to read as a kid in the 90s to no avail. I cannot remember the title or author but I lived in Beaumont, TX and this may have been a local author from Louisiana. It’s about a black boy growing up in the South in the 1940s and 1950s (possibly 1930s) his nickname is “Brother” and he has a lot of siblings- one is nicknamed “Sister”. They are all light skinned with nice hair (he had pictures in the book) and I remember one younger sister named Dolores. Sister accidentally got her arm ran over and covered her swollen arm with a jacket so she wouldn’t get in trouble. The guy grew up to be a writer and I believe the book was written in the late 80s or early 90s like 1990-1992.

I’ve been searching for this book for years now and posted in soooo many groups and no one comes close to knowing. I’m starting to think I imagined the book at this point. Can someone pls help?
