Prompt: Evaluate the extent to which the Columbian Exchange fostered change in the Americas in the period from 1491-1700

The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of goods, ideas, and disease between the "New World" or the Americas, and the "Old World" previously explored world of Europe. This exchange started for economic and religious reasons. People from the Old World wanted to spread their religion to the New World. and initially the Americas were discovered while people from the Old World tried to find a route to the Asias to trade. Through this exchange between the Americas and Europe, diseases like smallpox were brought to the Americas, ideas from the Old World were brought to the New World, and crops and livestock were transferred between the two "worlds". The Columbian Exchange massively fostered change in the Americas between the period 1491 to 1700, and caused a massive increasing in the death of Native-Americans, destruction of Native-American culture, and improvements to the hunting techniques of the Native Americans.

The Columbian Exchange led to a massive increase in the death of Indians in the Americans People from the New World brought disease like smallpox which decimated Indian populations, who had no defence to these foreign diseases. On top of that, the Spanish also enslaved the Indian population and forced them to work under the encomienda system, which was a system of brutal and forced labor that caused many Native Americans to die. Indians were forced to work under harsh conditions and rarely given periods of rest, which caused massive amounts of deaths. Due to the common Spanish belief that the Spanish had that Indians were subhuman due to them not being Christians as well as having distinct values, the Spanish believed that Native Americans did not deserve to be treated properly, the system persisted for an extremely long period of time, causing the death of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans. Not all the Spanish believed Native Americans were under them, as shown in the text A Very Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies by Bartolome de Las Casas, who described Native Americans as intelligent and undeserving of the atrocities the Spanish committed against them. This account portrayed the "black legend" of Spain as an uniquely cruel colonizer, and shows how some Spanish at the time did not believe that Indians were subhuman. This account by Las Casas pushed Spain into passing the New Laws of 1542, in which they outlawed the encomienda system and instead used the repartimiento system in an effort to appear benevolent. However the repartimiento system was only improved in name, and although the Indians were now paid for their labor, they were still forced to work under harsh conditions for minimal pay, and many of them still died. Though there were efforts to view Natives in the Americas as equals, the spread of both disease and ideas of Spanish superiority brought to the Americas via the Columbian Exchange caused the death of countless Native Americans.

Furthermore, the Columbian Exchange also fostered change in the Americas by destroying Native American culture. The Columbian Exchange included not only the ideas of Spanish superiority and the spread of disease, but also included the spread of Christianity. The Spanish came to the New World believing that they should give the gift of Christianity to the Native Americans who were "heathens" and had a polytheistic religion. Christianity was introduced to Native Americans, and was typically forced upon them by both the Spanish and English colonists. The English colonists, particularly in regions like the Massachusetts Bay Colony, created "praying towns", where they attempted to convert Native Americans into Christians. These towns popped up to the belief of the colonists of the time that Christianity was the superior religion, and that they had a duty to spread it. Many Indians incorporated Christianity into their polytheistic religion, adding Christ to the list of gods and deities that they worship. However, the Spanish, believing that Christianity was the superior and only religion, often inflicted violence on the Native Americans and forced them to convert to Christianity and not practice any religion. The Columbian Exchange brought these ideas from the Old World, and caused a massive loss in the culture of Native Americans. They were not allowed to practice their own religion, and they were forced to act in a certain way that aligned with beliefs from the Old World.

Finally, the Columbian Exchange led to an improvement in the hunting technique of Native Americans. Livestock like pigs were brought from the Old World, and they had no natural predators and therefore their population flourished. This made it much easier to have livestock to survive on, and caused Native American tribes to become more sedentary compared to before. On top of that, horses were introduced from the Old World, and were used by Native Americans to hunt. Some may claim that all changes brought from the Columbian Exchange negatively affected the Indians living there, but new technologies and weapons as well as livestock greatly improved the hunting experience of Native Americans. Weapons and horses made it much easier to hunt, and caused Native American tribes to become more sedentary over time.

In the end, the Columbian Exchange led to a spreading of beliefs, disease, and livestock between the New and Old Worlds, which caused the Americas to change in many ways. The beliefs that were spread as a result of the Columbian Exchange will still affect the Americas much later, and ideas explained above such as the loss of Native American culture would only continue with further colonization as shown with the Dawes Act and other legislation forcing European worldviews onto Native Americans.

Any tips on what to change or do differently on another LEQ would be amazing, thank you
