boat movement

Hey everyone, how’s it going?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle player movement on a moving ship, so I decided to ask for some advice here.

I’m making a third-person pirate game, and I need the player to smoothly follow the ship’s movement while still being able to walk around on it normally.

You can think of how player movement works on ships in Sea of Thieves, for example. That’s the kind of feeling I’m trying to achieve: stable, smooth movement on a moving boat without jitter or weird sliding.

How would you approach this system? Would you use parenting, velocity compensation, custom character movement, or something else?
