Why is Euston’s interchange designed to force commuters to immediately U-turn as they exit the Tube to enter the Mainline side back into the station - especially given their relatively recent build in the 1960s?

Can’t remember the number of times we’ve gotten wet in the rain just because of that U-turn in the open amidst the crowds - there’s literally a glass wall directly straight ahead from the escalators that seems like such an obvious solution & quality of life improvement…has no one ever thought of this since the 1960s rebuild?

Everyone welcomed Crossrail/ Elizabeth Line & HS1’s construction & opening with excitement & celebrations - so what makes HS2 uniquely so controversial in comparison?

Almost everybody across the UK welcomed the construction of the Crossrail Project for building the Elizabeth Line (the largest construction project in all of Europe) - so why is High Speed 2 (UK’s other major rail infrastructure project into London) so controversial in contrast that has already had most of its branches cut short to Birmingham even after the construction has already started (if anything, Crossrail increased it further to Reading & Heathrow Terminal 5 after construction started) & is quite politically controversial with all major parties and politicians having opinions on it & politically contentious that was kind of nonexistent with Crossrail & even HS1 by comparison?

…and what’s the point of controversies about its existence since the 2020s - cuz even if a referendum or new prime minister suddenly decides to scrap the whole project anyways, what will happen to all the disruptions, demolitions, excavations, tunnels and station foundations already constructed since some 6 years already across massive construction sites in Euston, Old Oak Common, Birmingham & everywhere in between - not to mention the companies, contracts, paperworks & jobs across all these years?

Did they cut back the Leeds, Manchester & East-West Link route ideas before these sections even started constructions by comparison?

It feels strange how it even got the go ahead from the government in the first place if its basic elements like the route, station designs, budgets and estimated completion dates are all massively subject to changes & far from being finalised especially with any form of consensus…

It’s insane how None of the 5 South London stations closed ‘temporarily’ during WW1 have reopened 111 years & a century later - given the enormous station-free swathe of Zone 2 London it is

What helped the Rebuilds of both St Pancras & King’s Cross stations successfully retain (& even further beautify) their Tall Grand Victorian Entrances - that their neighbour Euston lacked during its modernisation, removing its Grand Victorian heritage entirely by comparison?
