Last Fall I was eating a chicken wrap on a bench and this Yellowjacket insisted that it have some. Naturally, I didn’t really want it crawling all over my food, so I would gently put my hand between it and the sandwich and move my hand toward it (slowly). It would back off, then come back in for another attempt, and this went on for the better part of a minute. Eventually it gave up and focused its foraging-attention on an old bit of food (onion?) on the ground by the bench. I sat and watched it trying to fly away with the piece, but it didn’t have enough lift. It then resorted to cutting a piece of it off, but it wasn’t able to get good purchase on it and kept rolling around causing it to lose the spot where it began to cut. I’ve been frustrated by work-holding issues myself, so I decided I’d lend a hand. I was surprised that it didn’t seem bothered by me in the least bit, and its compadre even came and started working on the off-cut and lugged it off like a Super Stallion. Living things are cool, and I’m glad to have had this little interaction. Happy Tuesday, folks.
