Let me know….They are never on time and all morning both buses are just straight up following each other. Bus drivers always got a stanky face and attitude other than that one super positive older lady who I love. Learning from my mistake of not getting a parking pass. Kudos to those who have to deal w this while not having a vehicle. Maybe it’s just my route but dang wish they could just be where they say they’ll be.

Genuine question. As an American woman, I am constantly shocked at how chivalrous, understanding, and honest my Persian bf is. We’ve been together just over 6 months and he treats me so dang well it makes me want to cry (tears of joy). He constantly gets me flowers, holds the door or umbrella for me, holds my jacket when I put it on, even brings the car around when it’s raining so I don’t have to get wet. I’ve only ever dated American men and half of the things he does would never even cross my mind as I’m not used to seeing or experiencing this kind of treatment outside of movies or something. I have never asked nor expected him to do these things for me, he just does them! He has never raised his voice or invalidated my feelings either. Truly a sweet, soft-hearted man in his words and actions.

Maybe I’m just used to garbage human beings due to my upbringing and experiences and in no way am I complaining or ungrateful (actually, the opposite), but I’m so curious if this is a common thing in Iran or Persian culture in general? He has told me his parents don’t necessarily have the best relationship, but that his father still does these types of things for his mother as if it’s expected. Is this the case? Are yall just at a higher caliber than American men or did I just get super lucky? Is this treatment expected within the culture? I mean I know Iran is known for it’s poetry and while I’m not well versed on its history I tend to associate poetry with romance or sensualness so that is leading me to believe maybe it’s a cultural thing?

Potential secondary question: are there any cultural or relationship related expectations or norms for women other than maybe cooking and/or child-rearing? (both of which I can/would happily do). Anyway, let me know if this isn’t the right sub — I’m just so curious!

P.S. Not very good at doing TLDRs…talk too much

What the title says. I’m currently a CS PhD student at an R1 US institution and have several friends who were denied to work with several different Chinese PIs who seem to only employ/fund students from China. Numerous of my Chinese friends have said this is a common practice for Chinese PIs in the US. Is this true? I guess I just have many questions as to why. Like is it a culture or work ethic thing/preference? Why work in the US and not work with any Americans or students from other countries for that matter? Is this just a thing in my institution or department?

At least at my institution there are a handful of first-year PhD students I know who don’t feel confident reaching out to PIs due to their entire lab being from their home country and feeling like they didn’t have a chance. I guess I’m just curious if this is a common thing or just a select few situations I happen to have heard about.

So I’ve done this for years and after being on the kitchen/restaurant side of Reddit I’m curious if I’m actually wasting peoples time. For example, if the total is 15.58 I’ll just put a flat 20.00 as the total and leave the tip blank. Essentially leaving the math for the server to do. Is that annoying? Should I just take the 10 seconds to write the exact tip? Does it matter when calculating tips?

I’m usually one to do everything I can do make life easier for restaurant staff (gathering all menus, putting dishes together, refusing extra dishes I won’t use - like the soy sauce dish at sushi restaurants), but idk I guess I wanted some perspective. Lmk if this isn’t the right community (this is literally my first time posting on Reddit)
