The Senders
I was too young to see The Senders when they formed around 1976, back when they played Max’s Kansas City and so many other hallowed halls of rocknroll heaven. Too young to see them when they were (mostly) in their 20s. Too young to see them when Johnny Thunders joined the band (for two weeks before they realized that being in a band with him might not be good for their health).
But…around mid ‘88, they reformed to do a show at CBGB’s. (And recorded it for release on Midnight Records). Then they decided to keep going. That October, they helped reignite the flame of a New York rocknroll scene that was certainly not burning too hot. It was still happening, but The Senders started playing every Monday night. And soon that was the hottest ticket in town. And it was free!
They were a superb live band.
They’d also invite other great local acts to open for them, making a scene happen around them. They’d do two months of Mondays, then hand it off to another cool local band for a month before repeating the 2 month - 1 month bit. This went on for a few years and really revved up NYC.
They had a ton of great songs, including “When I Die, I’ll Be a Ghost (which I thought the Stones could’ve had a hit with). https://youtu.be/Cm49oqM7Nd8?si=B65rC-OQDMDLtGzw

Thank you for all the wild nights, my friends. Rest In Peace.
