What do the lyrics of "I want the one I can't have" even mean?
It is my favorite smiths song, and I have trouble even understanding it. I did search but it just says the meaning but doesn't explain why, I think the first part is about being gay (or bi because they have songs that are straight af, so I think bi, but regardless) but yk still closeted because the assumed biological attraction is to the opposite sex, so when he feels attracted to the same sex, he now wants the one he can't have, or is it because the other person is straight; I am convinced with both. And it is kinda true, I'm not gay or bi but my friend is and she likes this girl, the girl might also be bi, hopefully she is, she really likes her.
I don't understand the "A tough kid who sometimes swallows nails" line, the song was written by Morrissey so I guess it's related to him, so please tell if you know.
Overall, I think it's about homosexuality and societal norms, the tough kid part is very unclear to me.
