Need Advice About UK/Ireland QS Workflow
I recently got hired as a Quantity Surveyor for an Ireland-based company under a remote setup. I was hired mainly because of my estimating experience, but I’m still trying to understand the full QS workflow in UK/Ireland practice.
The company is a design firm and currently doesn’t have an existing QS team, so I’m honestly feeling a bit lost. They provided me with plans and BOQ summaries as references, but I’m confused about how the quantities were originally measured because there are no marked-up drawings or detailed quantity breakdowns available.
I just wanted to ask those who have experience working with UK/Ireland-based companies as a QS:
• What is the typical role of a QS in a remote setup for UK/Ireland companies?
• How are BOQs usually prepared? Do you base them on NRM/ARM4/SMM, or does the company normally have its own format?
• Do you usually prepare detailed BOM/material breakdowns, or is the work mostly BOQ-focused?
• How do you normally build up rates for pricing?
• When doing takeoffs, do companies usually provide marked-up plans or quantity backup files, or do you measure everything from scratch?
PS: I came from local estimating work, so international QS practice is still very new to me. I’m only a few days into the job and just trying to understand the workflow properly.
Please be kind. I genuinely want to learn and do well in this role.
