I Want To Fix This

Folks,

This part of my house is an eyesore and I want to see what I can do to improve (besides an obvious paint job).

I don't know how long my house will be around for due to area development. I'd like to at least keep my house looking presentable.

I'm a fairly handy gal and I have done a lot do work around my house. If there are some things I have never done or not sure about, I know enough to research and ask for help.

I own a lot of different power tools. Accessibility to tools is not an issue.

I could probably get access to a couple extra hands if needed.

  1. The Stairs

I get this has to go. It's starting to rot in some places.

Underneath the stairs is a shed storage. It's got a metal panels and pine needles starts to pile up and it's annoying to clean.

I want to remove this and replace the stringers. I think I can copy the outside and cut a new one up.

  1. Railing

This is currently wood. The vinyl decking material wraps around the post. The post is some what wobbly in some spots

I wanted to replace all wooden components. Either going with wood or potentially metal.

The problem is that there's support post for the ratty metal roof above.

I'm not sure if there's a way I can shift around the support to make things look neater? Or do I basically need to copy what it's currently there.

Whoever put this together, didn't install any sort of flashing between the ratty metal roof and the side of the house it's on..so when it rains, water can be seeing dribbling down the siding.

In order to preserve the vinyl decking material around the post, I'm assuming if I trim around, glue it back down. I can put a base on top of the deck and then put a post for better stability?

I don't mind putting some work into it. I'm just hoping someone can offer some perspective on this that I'm not seeing.

It's really ugly.

The front of my house I have a large sundeck and we have metal railings. Not sure why we didn't do the backside at the time.

Why Is This Owl Hooting?

Heyo,

Video: listen to the first 2 seconds and ignore my dad talking lol.

I'm pretty sure this is an owl hooting. For the past few weeks, this thing hoots all hours during the day. It's stressful for me when I need my peace and quiet because of everything that happens (my dad with dementia and a dog that barks).

I understand I can't control this owl and what they do. I'm just trying to understand why it's been going off daily for the past few weeks. I don't hear hooting at night but I'm also not really outside at night.

Is this owl in distress? Or this is some sort of mating call?

Sometimes he/she hoots for 2-5 seconds and stops. Then starts off maybe 15 mins later or sometimes nothing for a couple of hours.

I'm in the Fraser Valley (BC, Canada) for a few weeks with my dad. Out of the many times I been here, this is the first hearing this.

The one in the video is coming from the backyard. I also heard it from the front and I couldn't see anything in one of the trees.

My coworker thinks maybe it could be a speaker someone placed and plays the sound. I'm not too sure since it's not very consistent and I'm hearing it from the front and back of the house.

I also have a hearing loss so trying to figure out where sound comes from can be difficult for me. It has to go on constantly for me to be able to narrow down..so if it stops right away, I can't pick up on the directions fast enough

Pinch Flowers or Nah?

Heyo My Tomato Loving Peeps,

Pacific Northwest zone 8B here.

I'm working on growing my beauts and during today's patrol I noticed my sungold flowering.

Now they were in solo cups before and a few days ago, I moved most of the bushiest tomatoes and the most almost root bound ones up potted them.

Problem is that I'm with my dad in a different city and I brought all 40 pepper and tomato seedlings with me and raised them for the past few weeks.

I fertilize them with Neptunes Harvest Tomato and Veg one week and the fish fertilizer the next week.

They also have other mixings in it and slow release tomato fertilizer kibbles.

I should be able to up pot them again into a bigger container in a couple of days when I get home. Because I don't think the current size is good enough for them.

My question is, should I leave the flowers alone? I am seeing different answers: remove it, or leave it.

I'm planning on sticking them all down in the ground. The weather here has been exceptionally warmer than usual (10-15 degrees warmer for our region). Now it's slightly cooled down and normalizing. I'm wondering if it's has anything to do with the warmer weather. That caused them a little stress.

First 2 are the sungold in question. Others are my overall tomatoes (and peppers). And I'm aware of the foilage damage. They got either chewed up by birds or pinched when I put them into tht crate to move.

Folks,

This is probably more of a rant.

I'm currently looking after my dad while his wife is away for a few weeks.

My dad has been increasingly difficult and stubborn.

I'm on medications that supresses my appetite. And I also got sick a few times before.

Regardless of what I tell him, he insist I eat pretty much all the time. He also gets upset if the dog doesn't eat but she's a very fussy eater. Sometimes he force feeds her and it's frustrating. When she eats, he's happy.

I honestly don't like the food he cooks. I can make my own food and I only really eat like 1.5 times a day.

Yesterday he had a melt down because he had to keep warming up his food to give me. Even when telling him I'm making my own food. He got frustrated and threw everything out.

I was hoping this morning he would be better but he's basically got himself in the bedroom downstairs and told me he wants me to leave the house. Well last time I left, he also had a meltdown screaming saying he was wandering the streets looking for me (he didn't) and that I'm supposed to take care of him since he sick.

My dad has always been angry at the entire world. And has been like that before. Sometimes his rants are extremely uncomfortable and I have to stand there and take it. Especially when it has anything to do with my uncle. He blames my uncle for his dementia (because they used to fight all the time).

When we were younger, when he would hit his moods, basically my mom, sister and I would just stay in our rooms because he was verbally unpredictable.

I have done some troubleshooting and I think it's because of his tooth. He was adamant to see a periodontist and get gum grafting. I'm like you need a general dentist to go in and clean your teeth because you have tartar build up. We went around in circles for that.

I was able to convince him to get to the dentist and it revealed that he needs a root canal on one and an extraction due to an infection festering on the other. Lucky I got him in a good mood.

Unfortunately, they couldn't do the extraction because of the medications he's on and his previous heart issues. Now we have to wait for clearance from his family doctor (which he doesn't really see).

Dad has been stubborn about going in and getting a proper diagnosis for his dementia because he doesn't like the exams. So I don't know exactly what type he has.

He didn't take his medications last night. But he took his medications this morning.

With him hiding out in his room, arms cross, telling me to leave the house... anything I can do? Or just try to be invisible and hope he gets over it by tomorrow.

Heyo,

I posted here last night

https://www.reddit.com/r/Spooncarving/s/7TLx5EA9a8

And I got down to getting the shape somewhat axed out.

However, this one has a slight bend

If I follow the bend on the handle, I can make it longer (ie 12")

If I don't follow the bend, my handle will be about 8-9" (maybe 10")

Any ideas for design? I'm really not good with stepping outside my comfort zone for designs yet.

It also has a little heel 👠 and I'd like to see maybe if I can incorporate into my design

I might name this one Pradadle or Ladle-boutin (if it don't screw it up).

Heyo Fellow Spooners!

I'm trying my hand in carving a ladle. Never carved one and I'm iffy about screwing this one up. I seen some videos in which people cut and do some controlled axing.

I think it's mostly for the bigger hunk of wood.

I believe this is an eligible candidate for a ladle or a small one at least.

Before I screw this up, any advice?

I started my tomatoes about a month ago.

2 weeks ago I potted most of them up into solo cups. Some I had to wait another week because I needed soil.

I noticed that one of my San Marzano Lampadina looks weird and I'm not sure if the growth is stunted

See pictures 1 & 2

Picture 3 & 4 is the other San marzano Lampadina that looks normal and growing fine.

Just to share my excitement as a first time tomato and pepper mom.

A month ago I was concerned that my King of bell peppers and Trinidad Perfume Peppers were shrimps as they weren't growing.

After making some changes (thanks to everyone here), look at them now 🥹🥹🥹.

They grown so big. Now I actually have to repot them again because it's starting to fruit. I'm working on hardening them off but it's super windy today. I want them to be outside more.

They grew a lot bigger than what I had them last week.

1&3 are my sweet peppers that I was concerned about.

Rest are my other hot peppers and tomatoes I got going.

Picture 5 and onwards were about a month ago. Including some that had questionable roots. I think one died but all the others pulled through. Now they are growing fast.
