An arctic paradise hidden high in the highlands

A weekend stravaiging in and around the northern corries of the Cairngorms felt much less like a journey in Scotland and more like stepping into another world entirely. The higher that was climbed onto the plateau, the more the landscape changed, replaced instead by vast arctic emptiness, sculpted granite, lingering snow, and a silence so still it seemed almost ancient.

There is something so mesmerising about the Cairngorms. Raw beauty unlike anywhere else in the country. The corries loom like amphitheatres carved by ice, while the plateau stretches endlessly. But even in such a harsh and unforgiving environment, life still survives in extraordinary ways. Small alpine flowers cling to cracks in the granite, hardy mosses and lichens paint colour across the stone, and rare arctic plants survive here. The remnants of the last ice age.

The plateau is a place shaped by ice, weather, and time. It’s a landscape that humbles you, strips everything back, and reminds you just how untamed these mountains really are. An unforgettable weekend in a truly magnificent landscape. An arctic paradise hidden high in the Highlands.
