How big do these run?

Reviews say they run large. I'm a solid medium in the regular daydream denim shorts with the zipper and button. They do stretch out though and I have to throw them in the dryer before wearing again. Should I size down in this pull on version?

We found out this weekend that our major year peewee was the only kid cut from making AA. On top of that, there were some extra spots that were filled by House level kids or B level kids. Understandably he is devastated as are we since we have been with this same crew for several years. We are also confused as we received no feedback with the offer for the lower team and my child was a top performer last season, no discipline issues, friends with everyone (even hung out off the ice) and had an amazing tryout. At this point we feel as if it's personal but can't think of a reason why. I was asked by the coach last season to help on the bench and we had a great year. Many parents texted me and thanked me throughout the season and there was zero negativity. That coach moved up to bantam so this decision has nothing to do with him. Anyways, there was never any favoritism shown to my child whatsoever. I actually didn't work with forwards at all and that was his position. All in all it was a great season. All of this has been a shock, again, no feedback was provided. And now all the families who moved up to AA are texting us wondering what happened. And saying things like "guess we will never know what happens behind the scenes"

So I guess my question is two fold. Do we let our son play on this lower level team. From what we can tell it will be basically all minor year kids with much lower skill set. Or do we take a break from travel for a season and go back to House. I'm worried the jump back into travel with a different organization will be tough. We realize getting cut is part of sports. If you were ever cut in this manner, what was your experience and what made you excel in the future and not give up? Right now, we are just dealing with a child feeling majorly rejected and we don't really have any explanation for him as it doesn't seem skilled based.
