“Met a Guy Training for Tahoe 200 at My Kid’s Gymnastics Class… and the Conversation Got Wild”

Story from gymnastics today while talking to another dad.

Guy tells me he’s running the Tahoe 200.

So I ask, “Oh, so you’re a runner?”

He goes, “No, I just figured… why do 100 when you can man up and do 200, you know?”

I looked at him and said, “Well… because that’s kind of like doing high school before kindergarten.”

And somehow the conversation only got better from there.

I asked how he was planning to fuel.
He answers with “Calories per hour.”

Cool… but WHAT calories?
Gels? Liquid carbs? Real food? Electrolytes?
Dude had no clue. Just “cals an hour.”

Then he casually says:
“It’s okay, I can just quit whenever I want.”

Which sounds reasonable until you realize Tahoe 200 isn’t exactly a local 5k and “quitting” might happen 30 miles deep in the backcountry at 2am.

Then I asked what kind of mileage he was doing.

He proudly says:
“100 miles.”

And I’m thinking:
“Wait… 100 a DAY?!”

Nope.

That was his BIG week. 😂

Ultra runners are either the most inspiring humans alive or completely detached from reality. Sometimes both.
