F30 HU_ENTRY - 8.8" screen + CarPlay (MMI) — possible?
Hey everyone,
I have a 2014 F30 with the standard 6.5" screen (like in the picture above).
I haven’t checked the exact head unit yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s the HU_ENTRY (no navigation). I’m looking to upgrade to an 8.8" display and add Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. From what I’ve researched, I could go with an Android screen, but I’ve heard mixed things about lag and overheating since everything runs on the unit itself. The more interesting option for me would be an MMI box, since it keeps the OEM system intact and just adds CarPlay on top.
My main question is: Can I install an 8.8" aftermarket or OEM screen just as a display (basically as a monitor) when using an MMI box? Or is upgrading to a larger screen not possible with the HU_ENTRY head unit (compared to EntryNav/NBT)? From what I’ve seen, there might be resolution or compatibility limitations depending on the head unit.
Would really appreciate any advice or experience from people who have done this setup!
